boondocks with aurora team

I held a summer sales contest for my studios and the Aurora studio came out on top. The prize was a night at Boondocks. All but two of my employees from the Aurora studio were able to join us. We had dinner and then played laser tag, drove go-carts, played some mini golf and a few arcade games. I’m glad I had this opportunity to celebrate with my staff. They are a good group.

colorado love

I had the best day at work. I opened up the studio nearest to home (love when I don’t have to manage the long drives) and hurried through my commitments. I had several customers that were sneaking in before the snow arrived and the studio was hopping and happy.

Before I took off for the day I was able to paint a few pieces. I’ve had some gifts I’ve been wanting to make and finally made the time to paint them. I’m excited to see them fired.

Feeling the Colorado love today:

As I pulled into the garage big, fluffy snowflakes started to fall. I love it! I love the snow and can really appreciate a good spring snowstorm. While everyone else curses the weather, I bundle up, turn on the fireplace and love every minute of it.

painting tiles and swimming party

I spent my morning painting tiles with 100 of my neighbors at our Easter Eggstravaganza event. This was first year I worked the event for Color Me Mine and it was a success. Everyone had a great time and we had lots of new painters.
The girls met up with school friends for a pool party. They had a blast and swam for several hours. They came home exhausted with lots of treats!

parent-teacher conferences

The girls were off school today for parent-teacher conferences. Just as they did yesterday, the girls split up with Annabelle spending the morning at her friend Kierra’s house and Gwyneth heading with me to the Littleton studio. After lunch we all met at the school for conferences which went even better than expected. I’m proud of these little ladies and what they’ve accomplished this year.
We met up with the Tendlers for dinner at Chuys. We discussed some summer vacation plans and I hope we get those on the calendar sooner than late! Always a fun time with these peeps.
And then home to snuggle up and watch  Friends with my Annie. She’s become quite obsessed with the show and I’m encouraging it. We started watching together from the beginning. I’ve always been a huge fan and it’s been fun to share it with her.

school cancelled

We received an email at 6 am that school was cancelled for the day. Over 500,000 students were effected by the closures across Colorado. A young woman, obsessed with the Columbine tragedy, caught a flight from Florida to Colorado and immediately purchased a gun. There was a state-wide man-hunt and the threat was taken very seriously. I’m grateful that so many schools were closed including our own. Nothing is more important than these girls of ours.

Being small business owners has it challenges and days like these are at the top of the list. Businesses still have to be opened. We can’t call in sick. We always have to show up.

Annabelle chose to go to the kitchen with B and Gwyneth joined me at the Aurora studio. I tried to talk Annabelle into coming with us, but she loves the kitchen and is an amazing help to her dad.

Our morning was very quiet. Everyone seemed to be laying low and those who did come in to paint were very solemn. Around 10:30 am the news broke that the threat had been contained. A relief seemed to spread across the city and the studio quickly filled as parents felt more comfortable leaving their homes with their children.

Gwyneth and I worked our tails off. That girl continues to impress me with her work ethic. She does it all and even better, she does it all with a smile. I could tell my customers were impressed by her too. Many made a point to tell me what a kind and hard-working employee I had with me today. My heart soared.

I let her order lunch and she picked PF Chang’s on door dash.
I couldn’t let that hard work go unrewarded so we stopped for a frozen yogurt that Gwyneth gobbled up on the drive home. What a day!

interview and ice cream

Tis’ the season of crazy work schedules. I have a few really busy times over the year Thanksgiving week, Christmas break, Mother’s Day and spring break. We just survived spring break which was spread over nearly the entire month of March between all the studios. Well, most of us survived. For some of my employees it’s just too much and I always have turnover after the hecticness. I’m happy to report the good ones tend to stick around though.

B had parties galore at the studios and I had lots of interviews scheduled. Annabelle decided to join B at the kitchen and Gwyneth came along for the fun with me.
That girl sat with her head in that book for nearly 5 hours and we listened for another 2 hours in the car. She was so excited to finish the 5th Harry Potter book today and I was grateful to have her along for the ride.
That girl loves ice cream so we stopped for a sweet treat on the way home. The Crazy 8 store is closing shop so were able to stock up on summer clothes for her as well. We got over $300 worth of clothes for $57. I’d call that a shopping trip success.

We all met up as a family that evening quite exhausted! We had plans to go to a movie but everyone decided it was for the best if we just throw on pjs and watch Harry Potter at home. Best idea yet!

unicorn party

While we were home helping Gwyneth recover my studios were hoppin’ with Unicorn Parties. B made a bunch of unicorn cookies and the studios were looking magical. I planned this event especially for Gwyneth. I knew her and her friends would love painting those unicorns and the events did indeed sell out. Sadly, I planned too close to the surgery (the events were planned before the surgery) and Gwyneth couldn’t attend. They were such a hit that I would love to do it all over again for her.

I painted this little plaque for my mom and luckily it made it out of the kiln before she had to head home.

symphony and aurora holiday party

We stayed the night downtown and had a super lazy morning. So lazy in fact, we missed breakfast. That’s no bueno for Gwyneth.
We went for an early lunch at Tamayo so she quickly turned it around. Lunch was amazing! We enjoyed the endless brunch which is unlimited small plates at Tomayo. We’ve never been with the girls and it’s been ages since B and I have been — we’ve missed this place! It was delicious and will definitely be added back out to downtown dining routine.
After lunch we headed to the Colorado Symphony for the Children’s Christmas concert. It was a fun festive day and the music really got me excited for Christmas!!
After the symphony we high-tailed it down to Southlands. I had proposed going out for dinner, but my staff wanted to stay in and paint. We had dinner at the studio and then everyone painted a Christmas gift. It was nice to get everyone together (minus one employee who studying for finals). It’s nice to squeeze in a few celebrations during the hecticness of the holiday season.

wreck it ralph 2 and westminster holiday party

The girls each had a friend join us for a movie this morning. We went to see Wreck It Ralph 2, which I was actually pretty excited about because I thought the first one was really cute. About 10 minutes in I feel asleep! Oh my! I don’t know if it was a reflection of the movie or the fact that this time of year is just exhausting. I don’t think I slept long, but I did get a nice little nap out of it.

B opted out of the movie to get some work done, but met up with us for lunch afterwards. We enjoyed PF Changs which is right next door to the theater. It’s Gwyneth’s favorite and Annabelle tolerates it. Annabelle doesn’t really love asian food, which is kind of a bummer because it’s a fam favorite for the rest of us.

The girls enjoyed time with their friends and had a pretty low key afternoon.

We finished off the evening with a holiday dinner celebrating my Westminster studio staff. We met up at 3 Margaritas which was easy and fun. It was great to get everyone together, although we had two employees miss out because of finals. I figured it was pretty promising that so many were able to join us at this hectic time of year.1

fall festival

We hosted a booth at the girls’ school Fall Festival again this year. Painters could make little pumpkin magnets at our station. I had a staff member join us so we wouldn’t be tied to the booth all night and explore with the girls. It turned out pretty well, but there is always room for improvements. The magnets were not as big of a hit as the pumpkin dishes were last year so I have to come up with a new, better idea next year. Luckily we already have several ideas for these suckers…because we have quite a few leftover.
B and I also got signed up to work a few of the other booths over the course of the night.
Annabelle worked this booth with a friend too.
And the girls played! They had a great time with their friends. We gave them a lot of freedom to explore and have fun on their own. It’s always great to see them with their pals.
Annabelle soaked her teacher! Ha!
