jocelyn’s day

Jocelyn invited me on her school field trip and I jumped at the chance to spend the day with her. All the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from her school toured the Arvada Center, did some art work, and performed a skit based on the Revolutionary war.
I really enjoyed seeing Jocelyn with her school friends. She’s very social, very clever and funny, and very outgoing. I was proud to see her volunteer to perform in front of the group – she did a great job reading her part.
I feel really lucky to be able to have a day with my niece and feel very very special that she asked me to go with her. We had so much fun, picked Nathan up from school and finished our day together at Dairy Queen. Ending with ice cream is never bad…never.

big girl bed

I know everyone says it, but kids just grow up way too fast. Miss Gwyneth received her very own big girl bed today. As luck would have it her crib was recalled just as we decided to get her a new bed. We returned her bed for full store credit and she got a brand new bed with a trundle.
She did a “happy dance” when she saw her new bed and loved playing on it. Sleeping was a different story. She went down easy at first, but stayed in her room singing “My crib back. My crib back….” It wasn’t a difficult transition (it never is with Gwyneth) but it wasn’t seamless. I think each night she’ll get more and more comfortable with it (it’s a really comfy bed!).

conference

This morning we had our first ever parent/teacher conference. It was really quite entertaining. Annabelle is just a few months in to her first year of preschool and she’s doing great. Her teacher informed us that she is creative, smart, well-behaved (what????) and a leader in the class. (That last bit I believe is code for bossy!). She is very organized and has a great memory (uh oh!). She’s right on track and excelling in many areas.
Her teacher made two observations that really resonated with me. 1. Annabelle is a natural leader. 2. Annabelle learns quickly and easily — when she wants to. If she wants to learn something she does and that’s that. If she doesn’t though — too bad. She does it on her terms. This worried me and I’ll be keeping an eye on her study habits in the future.
When we asked if there was anything we should focus on at home her teacher said Annabelle loves to cut with scissors, color, and write letters so we could help her with those. And, oh yeah, using her inside voice! For being such a little girl she sure is loud. That’s a fact and  that actually made me and B laugh out loud!

shoes

With winter quickly approaching, it was time to pack up the flip flops and sandals and get out the sneakers and snow boots. The girls were not thrilled to be packing up their favorite summer shoes and were not at all interested in functional, reasonable, daycare/preschool appropriate shoe options.
To soften the blow of the sneakers and snow boots I let the girls each pick out one other pair of shoes. There’s not much more I can say about this except the girls wear their personalities on their feet…..

remember me?

Phew! We have been going non-stop for the last week. I don’t even know where to start. Sadly I have not taken a single picture. Not one! Luckily my husband snapped a few that I can share (pardon the quality – cell phone cameras? Whatcha gonna do?)

I’ll give you the highlights in case you missed us….

  • Nathan and Jocelyn had the day off school last Friday so the girls and I cruised down to their house to spend the day with them. We ate pizza, played games, and I got lots of quality time with the kiddos. Just FYI – Jocelyn is a super-duper cheater at games. She steals right from the bank at Monopoly, peeks at your person during “Guess Who”…you gotta keep an eye on that girl. We had so much fun – it was a perfect day!
  • Friday night I set off to San Antonio for the weekend. Why leave the kiddos and hubby at home you ask? Because it was for work and I had no choice. I spent 4 fun filled days in San Antonio attending a conference for Finance and Treasury Professionals. My days were filled with cash coversion cycle calculations, working capital analysis, and stock valuation. My evenings consisted of buffet dinners, noisy hotels with drunken fools, and wishing I was home with my family. Please, please try to contain your jealousy. I can only imagine how green you must be with envy….
  • Tuesday was my 1st day back in the office and turns out it was short lived. I received an invite for an off-site meeting and off I went to the Tech Center — which is Colorado talk for the other side of town. As I was leaving the meeting, the snow started to fall and I sat in traffic for almost 2 hours trying to get home to my hubby and babies.
  • Wednesday was my rescheduled sewing class. I finally made Gwyneth’s froggy pj pants!

There – we’re caught up! I’m doing my very best to keep up with all this craziness but am in serious need of quality time with my family. Here’s to a quiet and relaxing weekend! It’s just right around the bend…..right?

Enjoy the photos I received while I was in San Antonio:

Not to be too cheesy, because it’s just not my style….but I have to say I have the absolute best husband. He’s a wonderful dad and picks up the slack for me when I really need him. He takes such good care of the girls and me and keeps our home running smoothly. I get stressed and he just rolls with the punches. He’s a good man and we’re quite lucky to have him.

friendly and not so friendly skies

Dear Flight Attendants on United Flight from Chicago to Denver:

Thank you so much for your patience, understanding, and over-the-top friendliness and compassion toward me and my exhausted two year old. We planned our flight for Gwyneth’s nap time and she SCREAMED for the twenty minutes it took for us to get buckled in until we took off. Thank you flight attendants for very loudly acknowledging that she looked exhausted, offering her juice, holding her, walking her around the cabin, for moving my husband into our row, and for being overall kind and not making me feel like a horrible mother because she was simply overly tired. You are kind women and will surely be rewarded for your efforts.

Dear Woman in Row 33, Seat D (across the aisle):

Thank you for giving me that reassuring frown and head tilt while Gwyneth screamed. Thank you also for offering kind words after she quickly fell asleep. Thank you for telling us “All parents have been there” and for not making us feel like horrible parents for ruining your take-off. You too are very kind.

Dear Woman in Row 32, Seat C (Directly in front of us):

When the flight attendant said “Poor little girl, she is just exhausted. Overly tired” and you replied under your breath “Overly tired…bull shit!… She’s a Brat!!”, little did you know my husband was in the seat next to you . Little did you know that she would be falling asleep just seconds after take off and would not bother anyone the entire remainder of the flight. Little did you know that I also had a 3 year old on the other side of me sitting perfectly still coloring and smiling and whispering to her sister to please stop crying. Little did you know that Gwyneth is a wonderfully sweet, funny, rarely misbehaving two year old that is nothing but loving and a blessing to us. You maam are not kind. Considering you know nothing about me, my husband or our child you are rude, rude, rude. Perhaps on your next flight you will have a 2 year old who does not sleep, screams, and kicks the back of your seat the entire flight? I’m not wishing that on you, I’m just saying perhaps?

Besides, of my two girls this isn’t even the one is who is bratty. She’s actually my easy kid! If you’re going to be rude, you should at least be accurate…I’m just saying…

engagement party

The girls spent Saturday morning at a museum with B and Madison while the rest of us got ready for the engagement party. There were about 60 people at the party and it was a great opportunity for us to meet Darnell’s family. We’re really happy for Becky and Darnell and look forward to the wedding next year.
My girls wore the cute little purple dresses I made and personalized for them. What do you think? I’m pretty sure Auntie Stacy’s girls need a matching set for the rehearsal dinner also.
We partied hard and Gwyneth collapsed into a deep sleep. Miss-Party-Animal-Annabelle….stayed up until 11:30. She outlasted everyone. Way too much excitement!!

dresses

Today was wedding dress shopping day. All the gals headed to the bridal shop and tried on our gorgeous dresses for Auntie Becky’s wedding. As Annabelle and Gwyneth would say…we all became princesses. Annabelle was kindly asked to step off the podium to spin so she wouldn’t injure herself while Gwyneth stood perfectly still and ooohed and aaaaahed over herself in the mirror. They love, love, love their flower girl dresses. Auntie Becky modeled her wedding gown for us also – she looks beautiful. Sorry no spoilers here, you’ll have to wait for the wedding day.
We had lunch at Portillo’s – oh those Chicago dogs, how I love thee. B took the train out to my mom’s house and we had a family night at YaYa’s house. After the girls went to bed I spend the rest of the evening baking the cookies for the engagement party extravangaza tomorrow.
What do you think of Annabelle and Gwyneth’s polka dot dresses? I made them and personalized them. I’m pretty pleased.

monkey break

Looks like from now until the end of the year we are on the move. Our calendar seems to be bursting with birthdays, holidays, travel…. Oh my!  Annabelle and B are heading to Chicago tomorrow so we decided to take a break from the madness and spend a family night at Monkey Bizness. The girls loved it! We had pizza for dinner and they had so much fun playing together. It was a wonderful family night before the craziness of travel ahead.

tinkerbell

The girls were encouraged to wear Halloween costumes to their dance class this week. Annabelle dressed up as Tinkerbell…her angel costume is all white and I was worried it would get too dirty during the tumbling portion of her class. She is the youngest in her class, but does so well. They are learning the routine for their holiday show. I can’t wait to see them all perform in December.
